Dear Pema
The answer to the question, which you describe as simple, can also be stated in simple terms. This float
celebrated the Olympic Games this year, as numerous floats in the Rose Parade have celebrated Olympic Games in the past.
The
float was sponsored byAmerican interests and it was admitted to the Parade by the Tournament of Roses, a non-political community
volunteer organization that sponsors a wonderfulcelebration each year of New Year's Day. The Tournament works hard to avoid
political implications and intends to offer a great family event.
With due respect, I do not view the float as a platform
for anything except the Olympic Games 2008 and the great tradition that the Games represent for human endeavor, hard work,
discipline, and success on the merits. It is my hope that the occurrence of the Games in August will be inspiring to all who
participate and who view. I hope that this is helpful in at least conveying my thoughts about this matter.

Last fall, a teenage Tibetan nun was gunned down
by Chinese police as she tried to escape Tibet through a high Himalayan pass. An American guide LUIS BENITEZ was the first
guide to speak out about the incident, which was observed by an international group of climbers on Cho Oyu, a popular Himalayan
peak. The incident sparked major disagreement among the guides about how they should respond. Benitez speaks with Senior Producer
Christal Smith on what he saw, what he did, and what he would have liked to have done if given a second chance. Benitez currently
holds the world record for the most consecutive summits of Mt. Everest by a non-Sherpa.
